Mako Drying Systems™

Modular Alternative Drying Systems
The Infrared Drying Conveyor uses a drying process in which it removes moisture from the feedstock material to the air through heating the material and, finally, evaporating the moisture. The application of external heat to speed up the evaporation process is common practice in biomass drying. Most noteworthy, the heat transfer occurs from the infrared heaters directly into the material.

The Infrared Drying Conveyor is a safe and efficient system able to dry a wide range of materials. In addition, it is the perfect feeding system for the patented KDS Micronex™ machine.

Main features and benefits

  • uses infrared light to penetrate material directly without releasing the heat to the atmosphere.
  • internal temperature can reach up to up to 500°C (932°F)
  • as additional equipment to assist the KDS Micronex by pre-drying feedstock materials with high moisture content. It also preheats the feedstock material to maintain the required temperature inside the KDS Micronex
  • as a standalone solution for applications without grinding
  • the infrared lamps are connected to an adjustable switch to control the heat output
  • a blower at the end of the conveyor removes evaporated moisture as the product moves through the conveyor. This allows for dryer product to be fed into the KDS Micronex.

Models

In the biomass industry, drying can be an intermediate operation (i.e. reducing moisture content before grinding) or a finishing one (i.e. grinding and drying in one process with the KDS Micronex). We designed the Infrared Drying Conveyor to be used with the KDS Micronex for intermediate drying of feedstock materials with high moisture content.

The system has a simple and reliable construction which has a minimal footprint. In addition, it is taking up very little space within a warehouse and can be positioned on a standard concrete floor and doesn’t need any special foundations. We designed the Infrared Drying Conveyor for drying in medium and large production to increase throughput for the KDS Micronex because it will pre-dry and preheat materials before entering the system. These units are provided preassembled so there is minimal work to set these conveyors up after their arrival on site.

The Infrared Drying Conveyor uses infrared light to penetrate material directly without releasing the heat to the atmosphere. There are several modes of using the Infrared Drying Conveyor:

The MDS-9 Series

The MDS-9 Series is a smaller version of the MDS-13. We can custom build your MDS-9 or MDS-9m with fewer conveyors for a smaller footprint and electrical load. The MDS-9 series was developed for the small to midsize end users including pellet, gasification and farm-related end users requiring a pre-dried biomass product that can be processed on a small to medium-size scale. Other end users include manure, sludge, mineral, food and food waste.

Latin America waste producers can use the Mako 13 to reduce their pathogen requirements in a portable mode using a diesel generator set for power. The MDS-9 is totally portable with one requirement for proper hookup – either electrical power or a diesel generator set. The Mako Series can be moved to any location and with our serviceability and low energy requirements, the Mako equipment is unsurpassed.

Technical Information

  • 20′ Nanoshperical element heat system
  • 9′ high 3 tiered conveyors
  • Each element needs 2.33 amps
  • Double wall insulated
  • The MDS-13 Series

The new MAKO-13 and the MAKO-13m are built using the latest in patented hot element technology. With up to 10 Million BTUs’ of direct heat capability, 1300C/4000 degree instant on with 200C/400 degree surface temperature, the MAKO-13/m can dry coffee AG-crops, sludges, manures and other high-moisture content materials. It’s portable and can be moved to any location where electrical power or a diesel gen-set is available. The dryer is built with ribbed and cross-ribbed heavy inner steel construction and 2″ insulated aluminum or stainless steel exterior panels. Raw wet material is fed via infeed conveyor to the loading station at the entrance and is spread over the conveyor with tines and a distribution and transport system. Up to 3′ of material is heated and turned several times as it makes it’s way through five 18′ conveyors. Wet moisture in vapor form is evaporated and removed through a proprietary 30″ fan system.

Finished materials are loaded onto your outfeed conveyor or one of our MDS-20 series or MDS-30 series conveyors. The MAKO-13 series uses Allen Bradley (or your spec) controls with a PLC and VFD’s for speed controls of conveyors and sequential element on and off. Temperature controls are located at each level and as an option, special moisture control sensors can be furnished to control finite requirements for finished moisture content.

Our compact hot element twin screw conveyor systems are widely being used in industry to pre-dry various feedstocks. Many different kinds of bulk solids can be conveyed through the MDS systems to reduce high percentages of moisture prior to further processing. MDS conveyors are manufactured using either aluminum or stainless steel. The system is totally enclosed for safety and the flexibility of removing the elements when needed. The patented heating elements can produce extremely high temperatures in excess of 1300 degrees C. In line precise temperatures can be controlled with sequential on/off control with a touch screen PLC. Control of the pulsation rates of the elements and VFD control of the conveyor produces precise temperature control through the system.

The 20’ system uses 28 patented Nanospherical elements at 1850 watts per element and are installed directly over the conveyor for direct heat application. Low velocity fans are used to remove moisture while cooling the hot elements. MDS also can provide support equipment including hopper, de-watering, grinding and related equipment.
